Message from the Principal (February)

February - the shortest month of the year is here. It is also the month when we can start to see the sunlight during the days.

Last week F-3 had a big party celebrating that they are one hundred days smarter! It doesn't sound much, but imagine what you learn in a hundred days when you are a kid.

This week is Pride Week and this week is important because we need to change the norm. When we talk about Pride, not all know what it stands for. In schools we usually say that pride stands for professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence.

In the original eight-color version, pink stood for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for the soul.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q is for Queer, I is for Intersex, A is asexual.

Sometimes you can also see other variants with  "U" for "unsure",  "C" for "curious"; another "T" for "transvestite", "TS", or "2" for "two-spirit" persons; or an "SA" for "straight allies".

Happy Pride everyone!

Ms Markusson

Message from the Principal (January)

IES Skellefteå is growing in many ways and I am pleased to let you know that this week we will have our first international students.

IES Skellefteå International School is a private school that will offer the first three stages of the Cambridge International curriculum: Cambridge Primary (age 5-11), Cambridge Lower Secondary (age 11-14) and Cambridge Upper Secondary (age 14-16). Upper secondary students will graduate from the school after taking the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams. All teaching will be provided in English.

The international school will offer a programme which differs from the Swedish curriculum and therefore IES Skellefteå International School is for students who:

  • are resident in Sweden for a limited time
  • went to school abroad for an extended period and want to finish their education in Sweden
  • will move away from Sweden for a longer time
  • have English as a daily contact language, where one or both guardians have English as their mother-tongue

According to the Swedish National Agency for Education's (Skolverket’s) rules for international schools in Sweden, only students who meet one or more of these criteria are allowed to follow the international curriculum.

To attend IES International School the student must pay an annual tuition fee. If you want to know more about this part of the school, please contact us on info.skelleftea@engelska.se

Principal's Update September

Dear parents and guardians,

If you want to read this in another language than English, please use Google Translate:

With soon four weeks of school gone, I thought it would be appropriate to send you all an email to say welcome back to school again and to inform you of the magic that is taking place at Internationella Engelska Skolan Skellefteå.

Since we could not have Parent Information Evenings the way we usually do them, I would like to send a very special welcome to all the new families in our community. I promise that as soon as this pandemic is over, you will all be asked to come to school to meet us, to listen to me speak about what we believe in, what we do and how it works. I cannot wait to be able to invite you to see your child’s school more in action.

It has been a very good start of our second year this far. Remembering last year, which was perhaps the busiest time I have experienced in my life, our start this year has felt calm and smooth. It is of course busy but busy is good. We like having things to do.

Some updates...

We have completed the first PTS Conferences/Utvecklingssamtal for this academic year. In these meetings, the students’ own academic and social goals for the year have been set and students are now working hard towards achieving these goals and much more. Thank you for taking time from your day to attend these important meetings with your child and their mentor. Please continue to support your child with schoolwork at home. Your child’s development is a responsibility we share.

The new building for F-3/Primary (building 3) has exceeded our expectations. We planned the interior in detail last year and I must say that we are all very happy to see how this learning environment works so well for our youngest students in primary (lågstadiet). We now have access to our whole building and our planned growth for the future can continue.

Our students in F-3 have started completing the mandatory bedömningsstöd in Maths and in Swedish. The results of these bedömingsstöd are a crucial part of identifying which students need more support and which students need more challenges.

Our Fritids is up and running with many different activities to choose from each day. I cannot praise the Fritids staff enough for everything they do, and always with a positive attitude. When you pick up your child from fritids in the afternoon or drop them off in the morning, please remember to thank the staff for taking such good care of your child.

Our students in Junior School (Years 4-6) and Senior School (Years 7-9) have also settled in well in their new classrooms and with their new mentors and teachers.

Lessons, units and projects are all moving ahead in good pace and there are a lot more extra-curricular activities happening around the school this year. Keep checking SchoolSoft for more information. More is coming.

Our new staff are also enjoying their time at IES Skellefteå. As an example, I visited Mr Carlsson’s woodwork lesson today and I must say that I have never worked with a woodwork teacher that loves his subject the way that Mr Carlsson does. There is so much joy and pride in his lessons and that you can see in the students. They are really having a good time learning.

Wherever you are in the school, you will see staff interacting with students in both Swedish and in English. We believe in the power of staff presence and relationships. That is one of the foundations of our school community and I am happy to see that our newest members of the team are already onboard with that.

Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) consists of a dedicated group of parents who contribute a lot to the community. Unfortunately, we do not have PTA reps for each class yet. I would like to encourage parents to contact the PTA to see if this is something that you can be involved in. Our school community relies a lot on PTA to be able to offer community events such as Christmas Fairs, Spring Fairs etc.

Being a PTA rep is not that much work. You would represent your year team and help organise some activities and some fundraising events.

I will send a separate email with more information to the year groups where we do not have PTA reps yet.

The All School Goals!

I have previously shared some of our great results from last year. Based on last year’s results, this academic year, we have decided to set two All School Goals. These goals are related to everything we do and initiatives in different subject departments, year teams and Fritids are connected to these goals.

The All School Goals for the academic year of 2020/2021 are:

Improve the Calm and Safe Learning environment

Although staff, students and parents agreed that our school is one of the calmest and safest of all 37 IES schools (2019/2020) in Sweden, we think we can do even better.

We are working on our routines and expected behaviour with all students to make sure we continue to deliver on this promise.

Improve communication / Academic Feedback

This was also a strong area for us last year, but we agree that we can do better. We implemented grade talks and more communication already last term. Students will know why they received a certain grade and parents will be able to follow their child’s process more on SchoolSoft.

The vision for the school remains the same:

“A strong school culture based on the IES ethos, a second home for students and an important part of the growth of Skellefteå”

Again, welcome back and welcome to our students’ second home, Internationella Engelska Skolan, a school where we sing the same song.

Do not forget to follow us on Instagram and on Facebook: @iesskelleftea

Enjoy what is left of the week and we will see each other by the main entrance tomorrow between 7.45-8.10.

Kind Regards,

Mr Granström, Principal

From the Principal

Principal Appointed for IES Skellefteå

Principal Appointed for IES Skellefteå

Dear all,

My name is Frederik Granström and as of February, I will be the principal of Internationella Engelska Skolan Skellefteå, preparing a school which will open for grades F-9 in August 2019.

I am very excited to be bringing IES to Skellefteå, a town where I have strong family connections through my wife.

I have had the opportunity to work for Internationella Engelska Skolan since 2010. In 2011 I helped to open IES Hässelby and then spent three years as the school’s assistant principal, managing the daily operations alongside the rest of the leadership team.  I became the school's principal in 2016 and have lead the staff at Hässelby until now when I have been presented with the opportunity to start an exciting new school in Skellefteå.

My vision for IES Skellefteå is that it will be a strong community and that we will work together every day in order to provide students and staff with a calm and safe learning and working environment where teachers can teach and students learn. IES has, and will continue to have, high academic expectations for every child regardless of background or previous experience with education. We will maintain an international school atmosphere and culture where students learn to command the English language without sacrificing the Swedish language. It will be a truly international and bilingual environment. Order, structure and discipline in a warm, respectful and welcoming environment where students’ academic and social development always comes first is what defines IES Hässelby today and will define IES Skellefteå when we open in August.

I wish you all a pleasant winter break, and a happy Christmas, and look forward to meeting you in the new year.

Best Regards,

Mr Granström
