Principal's Update September

From the Principal

Dear parents and guardians,

If you want to read this in another language than English, please use Google Translate:

With soon four weeks of school gone, I thought it would be appropriate to send you all an email to say welcome back to school again and to inform you of the magic that is taking place at Internationella Engelska Skolan Skellefteå.

Since we could not have Parent Information Evenings the way we usually do them, I would like to send a very special welcome to all the new families in our community. I promise that as soon as this pandemic is over, you will all be asked to come to school to meet us, to listen to me speak about what we believe in, what we do and how it works. I cannot wait to be able to invite you to see your child’s school more in action.

It has been a very good start of our second year this far. Remembering last year, which was perhaps the busiest time I have experienced in my life, our start this year has felt calm and smooth. It is of course busy but busy is good. We like having things to do.

Some updates...

We have completed the first PTS Conferences/Utvecklingssamtal for this academic year. In these meetings, the students’ own academic and social goals for the year have been set and students are now working hard towards achieving these goals and much more. Thank you for taking time from your day to attend these important meetings with your child and their mentor. Please continue to support your child with schoolwork at home. Your child’s development is a responsibility we share.

The new building for F-3/Primary (building 3) has exceeded our expectations. We planned the interior in detail last year and I must say that we are all very happy to see how this learning environment works so well for our youngest students in primary (lågstadiet). We now have access to our whole building and our planned growth for the future can continue.

Our students in F-3 have started completing the mandatory bedömningsstöd in Maths and in Swedish. The results of these bedömingsstöd are a crucial part of identifying which students need more support and which students need more challenges.

Our Fritids is up and running with many different activities to choose from each day. I cannot praise the Fritids staff enough for everything they do, and always with a positive attitude. When you pick up your child from fritids in the afternoon or drop them off in the morning, please remember to thank the staff for taking such good care of your child.

Our students in Junior School (Years 4-6) and Senior School (Years 7-9) have also settled in well in their new classrooms and with their new mentors and teachers.

Lessons, units and projects are all moving ahead in good pace and there are a lot more extra-curricular activities happening around the school this year. Keep checking SchoolSoft for more information. More is coming.

Our new staff are also enjoying their time at IES Skellefteå. As an example, I visited Mr Carlsson’s woodwork lesson today and I must say that I have never worked with a woodwork teacher that loves his subject the way that Mr Carlsson does. There is so much joy and pride in his lessons and that you can see in the students. They are really having a good time learning.

Wherever you are in the school, you will see staff interacting with students in both Swedish and in English. We believe in the power of staff presence and relationships. That is one of the foundations of our school community and I am happy to see that our newest members of the team are already onboard with that.

Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) consists of a dedicated group of parents who contribute a lot to the community. Unfortunately, we do not have PTA reps for each class yet. I would like to encourage parents to contact the PTA to see if this is something that you can be involved in. Our school community relies a lot on PTA to be able to offer community events such as Christmas Fairs, Spring Fairs etc.

Being a PTA rep is not that much work. You would represent your year team and help organise some activities and some fundraising events.

I will send a separate email with more information to the year groups where we do not have PTA reps yet.

The All School Goals!

I have previously shared some of our great results from last year. Based on last year’s results, this academic year, we have decided to set two All School Goals. These goals are related to everything we do and initiatives in different subject departments, year teams and Fritids are connected to these goals.

The All School Goals for the academic year of 2020/2021 are:

Improve the Calm and Safe Learning environment

Although staff, students and parents agreed that our school is one of the calmest and safest of all 37 IES schools (2019/2020) in Sweden, we think we can do even better.

We are working on our routines and expected behaviour with all students to make sure we continue to deliver on this promise.

Improve communication / Academic Feedback

This was also a strong area for us last year, but we agree that we can do better. We implemented grade talks and more communication already last term. Students will know why they received a certain grade and parents will be able to follow their child’s process more on SchoolSoft.

The vision for the school remains the same:

“A strong school culture based on the IES ethos, a second home for students and an important part of the growth of Skellefteå”

Again, welcome back and welcome to our students’ second home, Internationella Engelska Skolan, a school where we sing the same song.

Do not forget to follow us on Instagram and on Facebook: @iesskelleftea

Enjoy what is left of the week and we will see each other by the main entrance tomorrow between 7.45-8.10.

Kind Regards,

Mr Granström, Principal
